Fjords, Fishing Villages and The Northern Lights

Steep fjords erupting from the clear green waters of the Norwegian Sea are the backdrop in the Lofoten Island Archipelago of Northern Norway – a bucket list destination for any landscape photographer. This Lofoten Islands photography workshop includes Small traditional fishing villages set below tall granite peaks, which fill the landscape with sleepy farmlands nestled among the inland valleys. Furthermore, despite being north of the Arctic Circle, the warm winds of the Gulf Stream keep winter temperatures mild. By visiting in October, we have the best conditions to try to capture the northern lights, which still make the occasional nighttime appearance.

Creating Dynamic Images In The Field

With the ever-changing weather and a golden hour that stretches long into the daylight hours of October, no two days are alike in the Lofoten Island Archipelago in Northern Norway. We will spend our time weaving between the fjords, exploring and photographing the fishing villages, lakes, farms, and beaches that define the region. While exploring, we will use neutral density and graduated neutral density filters to capture the shifting light of daytime. When the weather permits, we will venture out at night to hopefully capture the northern lights dancing over the already breathtaking landscapes.

Learn Behind Both The Camera And The Computer

Image creation doesn’t end at the click of a shutter. When we are not out roaming the lands creating images, we will have both group and one-on-one sessions with Adobe Lightroom Classic. During this time we will work on editing as well as how to best use Lightroom for your needs. This workshop is made to not only help you get great images in one of the world’s premier locations but also to send you home with a better understanding of what makes a great image and how to capture what your mind’s eye is seeing.

A Destination That Even Looks Good In Clouds And Rain

As with any workshop, you can’t control the weather. I have traveled far and wide to find an arctic winter location where we can create dynamic images no matter what the weather throws at us. We all hope for blue skies dotted with puffy clouds by day and colorful northern lights filling the skies at night, but even if Mother Nature (or Jord if we are sticking with the Norwegian thing) doesn’t cooperate, the dramatic fjords and picturesque scenes still offer great photographic fodder.

Lofoten Islands, Norway Tour FAQs

What will the weather be like?

Predicting the weather in the Arctic Circle is impossible. Our destination though is in the Gulf
Stream, which keeps the temperature rather warm for your latitude. You can expect temperatures
between 30F to 45F during October in the area. Rain, snow, wind, and sun are all possible, even in the same hour! We will be headed out even in the not-so-perfect weather to maximize our
potential of coming back with fantastic images. A gear list, including clothing you may want,
will be provided when a deposit is received.

This workshop doesn’t have long hikes. Most of our tour locations are close to where we park
our vehicles.

Most locations we visit will have bathrooms.

We will be staying at the Scandic Hotel in Leknes during this workshop. It is centrally located,
clean, and has a good restaurant within it.

Breakfast (a large meal in Norway) is included at our hotel each day. Snacks and water will be provided on our outings. Other meals are not included.

A basic knowledge of your camera is all you need. We teach all levels of photography, from beginners to pros.

There are flights each day that approach Leknes from a few major airports in Norway. From the USA to the final destination, expect up to 24 hours of travel. Flights can usually be booked
